BIpolar

Hi, I am SuAnne, an undergraduate study student at Capitol College near Washington, DC.,where like anywhere else, teen health issues are a concern. One of my most recent concerns are BIpolar teens.

We all have our ups and downs, our "off" days and our "on" days, but if you're suffering from bipolar disorder, these peaks and valleys are more severe. Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior–from the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other. More than just a fleeting good or bad mood, the cycles of bipolar disorder last for days, weeks, or months. And unlike ordinary mood swings, the mood changes of bipolar disorder are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function.

The causes of bipolar disorder aren’t completely understood, but it often runs in families. The first manic or depressive episode of bipolar disorder usually occurs in the teenage years or early adulthood. The symptoms can be subtle and confusing, so many people with bipolar disorder are overlooked or misdiagnosed–resulting in unnecessary suffering. But with proper treatment and support, you can lead a rich and fulfilling life.

This is a concern because these people are dangerous to others. I have a BIpolar family member. It is hard for us to deal with her because one day, she like's you, and the next day she wants to kill you. I just stay away from her now, because it is serious. She does not want help, so she does her. She has medicine for it, but she refuses to take it on a daily basis like instructed by the doctor. I fear for my life when I am around her. I have to stay alert and aware because she may snap at any time, and you never know what she will do in that snap.

Anorexia

Anorexia is an eating disorder where people starve themselves. Anorexia usually begins in young people when they start to hit puberty. People suffering from anorexia have extreme weight loss. People's usually loss 15 percent of weight, which is smaller than a normal person's weight. People suffering from anorexia are very skinny but make it seem like they are overweight. Weight loss is obtained by many ways. Some of the common techniques used are excessive exercise, intake of laxatives and not eating.

Anorexic people fear to become fat that's why their diet habits become obsessive. People with anorexia lead themselves to think they are overweight even when they become very thin, but what they don't know is that they are very ill or could be close to death. Often they will develop strange eating habits such as refusing to eat in front of other people. Sometimes the individuals will prepare big meals for others while refusing to eat any of it.

Anorexia is thought to be most common among people of higher socioeconomic classes and people involved in activities where thinness is looked upon, such as dancing, theater, and distance running, and modeling.

Anorexia has many symptoms such as; Body weight that is inconsistent with age, Loss of at least 3 consecutive menstrual periods (in women) not wanting or refusing to eat in public, Anxiety, Weakness, Brittle skin, Shortness of breath , Obsessiveness about calorie intake.

Dangers Teens Face While Driving

Hi, I am SuAnne, an undergraduate study student at Capitol College near Washington, DC.,where like anywhere else, teen health issues are a concern. One of my most recent concerns are the dangers new teenage drivers put themselves in while behind the wheel of an automobile. Although the permitted drivers’ age varies from state-to-state, teenagers are legally allowed behind the wheel as early as fourteen. I personally believe this was not the greatest decision the government could have put into action because at this age, children are young, inexperienced, and still going through a stage of maturing. I know at fourteen, I was still playing with Barbie dolls, which meant I hadn’t grew up from my childhood ways.

At age seventeen, teenagers have reached the point in their life where they think they have all the answers, which is a reason they do what they do, no matter if it is illegal or legal. States make it right for them to be behind the wheel. Most teenagers are still learning responsibilities up until age 18, and some take longer than that.

Dangers teens face while driving come from poor decisions, including drinking, speeding, texting, and talking on the cellular phones. In 2008, about 3,500 teens in the United States aged 14–19 were killed and more than 350,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes. Young people ages 15-24 represent only 14% of the U.S. population. However, they account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females. Together that is 58%, and the world is made up of a whole [100%], so that is more than half.

With that said, this issue matters to me, because, I am a victim of losing a teen sibling in a fatal car crash caused by drinking and driving. This on-going issue affects everyone in the world. Most people would think it only affects the people who multi-task while driving, or people that were killed or seriously injured in the car, and their family and friends. But someone more mature in evaluating knows it affects everyone else on the road, sidewalks, and sometimes it even affects those minding their business in their own household because you never know what is going on in the cars around.

Body Piercings

Body Piercings for teenagers are very popular today. The most popular ones are the ear lobes and the Navel, but of course there are others that people like to try such as; the Libret, the Nostril, the Nipple, any many more. most teenagers don't research the piercings they want before getting them so some teenagers end up learning the hard way in taking care of the piercings.

What teens don't realize is that piercings can be unhealthy or unsafe at time to get, and that it is a major health risk. It is important to make sure you or a friend never pierced your body it should be left up to a professional to perform the operation. make sure the shop is clean and the needle is well. It is also important to ask questions to make sure the piercing is safe for you to get. Most important ask the person who is performing the task what kind of body jewelry is being use just in case you are allergic to it or not.

If those procedures are not followed it is possible that your piercings can get infected or can receive a disease like chronic infection, uncontrollable or prolonged bleeding, scarring, hepatitis B and C, tetanus, skin allergies to the jewelry that's used abscesses or boils (collections of pus that can form under your skin at the site of the piercing), inflammation or nerve damage. It is very easy to catch those things if its not done or taking care of properly.

Jeremiah Madej was born in Baltimore, Md., and later moved to where he grew up in Pasadena, MD. He likes anything dealing with adventures and actions, and in his fee time he likes to work out and exercise. One adventure he would like to undergo in his future is going to Spain. This is after, of coarse, he has become financially able from his Accounting job and opening his own Accounting firm. One day, he would like to sit down and have dinner with Ghandi because he likes learning about people's past. His favorite place in DC is the Smithsonian because he likes history and science.

Jeremiah selected to attend Capitol for Business Management because it was a small school, with more benefits than a big University. If Jeremiah could change anything abou his school,it would be the atheletic oppurtunities Capitol offers. He enjoys the fact that there are not many distractions at Capitol so when he needs to do work, he can complete it with no problem.

Sickle Cell

Hi, I am SuAnne, an undergraduate study student near Washington D.C., where like anywhere else teen health issues are a concern for many. A popular sickness within African Americans is sickle cell.

Sickle cell is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. There are many types of sickle cell diseases’, some are harmful to the body, and will cause one to stay in the hospital, and some are manageable. The most common symptom of anemia is fatigue (feeling tired or weak). Other signs and symptoms include shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, coldness in the hands and feet, pale skin, and chest pain. If you experience any of these body complications, it is best you seek a doctor as soon as possible.

This is a health issue concern to me because, I, myself, am a trait carrier of sickle cell. Having the trait, you have to make sure whoever your partner is you have a baby with, is not a trait carrier too, because your baby could come out a carrier of the disease. Having the disease affects many African Americans and their families because the individual is at a higher risk of this sickness.

Depression

Hi, I am SuAnne, an undergraduate study student near Washington, D.C., where like anywhere else, teen health concerns are a major concern to many. Feeling down from time to time is a normal part of life. If you find that your often in this stage, and nothing can bring light to your day, you be experiencing depression. When one is depressed, they feel hopeless. Sometimes they may even feel like the world is against them.

Teenagers like everyone else, experience problems. I believe the only difference is sometimes teenagers have no one to talk to depending on the situation they are going through. This will cause them to be depressed. Symptoms of depression are sleepless nights, uncontrollable negative thoughts, always irritated, loss of appetite, and things become a challenge that once were easy for you. Common situations teenagers often face that cause depression are pregnancies, receiving a sexually transmitted disease, break-up, rape, and abuse. Although it takes a while to overcome, the first step is to recognize the problem.

Asthma

Hi, I am SuAnne, an undergraduate study student near Washington D.C., where like anywhere else, teen health issues are a concern for many. One major health problem among the world is Asthma.

Asthma is a chronic (long term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts in childhood. In the United States, more than 22 million people are known to have asthma. Nearly 9 million of these people are children. Asthma is a concern to me because I witness my mother having asthma attacks often. It is something scary to watch because it’s not much you can do.

Teenagers enjoy participating in sports activities in school. Asthma cannot stop you from being involved, but it can stop you from being as active because you often have to stop and catch your breath if you are doing a lot of moving. The fitter you are, the better your asthma reacts with what you do with your body. This should not be a reason for one to choose not to participate in physically fit activities because they are capable jus like any other person. At the 1996 Olympic Games, at least one in six athletes from the U.S. had a history of asthma, had taken asthma medications or had symptoms that suggested asthma. In fact, the athletes with asthma won just as many team or individual medals as their peers without asthma.
